Bone Loss and Loose Dentures

People who have been wearing dentures for a long time often suffer from bone loss due to a lack of sufficient chewing stimulus on the jawbone — dentures provide only about 20 percent of natural chewing power.

Denture wearers often face a weakening of the jawbone, which compromises denture retention. Relining the denture provides only temporary relief, as it frequently becomes loose again. Traditional dentures can accelerate bone loss as they put pressure on the gums and underlying bone without stimulating them. The loss of jawbone structure can cause the lower face to collapse inward, creating a prematurely aged appearance. Denture Stabilization can help prevent this process.

Are you a candidate for Denture Stabilization?

Dr. Marcus recommends denture stabilization for almost all denture wearers, as it significantly improves retention, chewing power and can help slow bone loss. If you're struggling with loose or slipping dentures, this solution can make a meaningful difference in comfort and function. Even patients with severe bone loss — who may not qualify for procedures such as full-mouth teeth replacement with implants— can often receive a snap-in denture, since two to four implants are typically enough to provide stability.
  • Snap-In Dentures

Dr. Marcus uses two implants in the lower jaw to stablize your denture, although for better security Dr. Marcus recommends four. The denture on the upper jaw tends to loosen more easily and he recommends three to four implants. He fits small attachments onto the inside of the dentures that securely snap onto the dental implants. The snap-in dentures can be taken out for cleaning and for overnight comfort.

    Snap-in dentures provide:

    • Much stronger retention than a traditional denture — won’t fall out unexpectedly
    • No need for adhesive in most cases
    • Easier to eat and speak confidently
    • Improved chewing power compared to regular dentures

For full stability, along with a natural feel, function and strength, Dr. Marcus can attach a new set of fixed-in, permanent teeth onto six implants. This is the Stabili-Teeth procedure.

    Stabili-Teeth:

    • Feels closest to natural teeth — no shifting or slipping
    • Restores full chewing power
    • Removes the false palate in the upper arch—speak more clearly and taste all of your bite again!
    • No adhesive, ever
